Things to ponder after leaving a job.

For most of us, this goes without saying. When you leave a company, either voluntarily or you by getting laid off, it’s best to keep your true feelings about your boss and co-workers to yourself.

Of course it’s a blow to your ego to be let go, but the real test of your strength is how you handle the aftermath. Our gut reaction, naturally, is to lash out. We all want to go out and defend ourselves, displace blame from our shoulders and out it squarely on the other guy. But it’s better to sit back and consider how this will affect you in your professional future.

Maintain Professionalism

No matter what employment niche you’re part of, you’re going to run into people who know people. When you’re out interviewing or networking after leaving a job, you never know what connections the person you’re speaking with has. He could be your former boss’s best friend, next-door neighbor or cousin. And by badmouthing your former employer, you’ve just shot yourself in the foot and you won’t get that job.

Many times it doesn’t matter how things ended with a previous employer. If you keep a cool head and let the dust settle, it’s very possible that your former employer will give you a solid recommendation in the future.

So while your gut reaction may be to send a scathing note to your previous employer or trash the company via a social media site or even verbally, remember the bridges you may need to cross in the future. By burning that bridge now, you’ve just given up a path you may need to take again. And whether it’s the near or distant future, there’s a good chance that bridge won’t be re-built for you to cross.

Jump right back into searching for work

The best thing to do after unexpectedly losing your job is to jump right back into the job search process. Unfortunately, finding a new job isn’t as easy as it was 10 years ago, and it takes time and effort on your part. Like anything else in life, what you think will happen tomorrow, may actually happen 6 months from now.

It’s easy to sit back and feel sorry for yourself. You are probably still stinging from what feels like a huge rejection, but it’s time to pick yourself up by the bootstraps and get out there to make connections. The sooner you act the better for many reasons.

1. You’re still fresh with ideas, knowledge and skills from your previous job.

2. You have current connections who can help you network or put word out that you’re looking for a position. If you don’t keep those connections working for you, you will soon be tasked with rekindling old relationships which will take longer to get you back to where you need to be.

3. You’re not defeated. After you have interviewed for months and gotten nowhere, your drive and determination starts to wane. You may begin to second guess yourself and start putting off the job search process more and more every day. The anger or frustration you feel from losing your job can be fuel for jumping in and finding a new position.

Update and post your resume

Along with this, you will also want to update the status on your professional social media sites as well. Make sure the dates of your former employeme are correct and that you change your title and status. Let your contacts know you are actively seeking work.

Also make sure your resume is updated with all your skills and accomplishments. If need be, contact a professional, possibly through the department of labor, who can assist you with editing your resume and writing a stellar cover letter. Get ready to knock the socks off of any potential employer who calls.

Also, you will want to post your resume on job boards and LinkedIn. Many recruiters use job boards on a daily basis to find qualified candidates for open positions. And these days, many more companies are using recruiting agencies to fill open positions as opposed to advertising for candidates and screening them by themselves.
