Hello all you employment seekers out there! My name is Corey Switzer – I am an Engineering / Technical Recruiter with TxMQ, and it’s time that we share the spotlight with our sister division (TxMQ IT Staffing) in the blogosphere!
As an introductory blog I was thinking about what I can write that will answer a question that many people have in this employment climate..
THE QUESTION: Why does it seem like I can go for months without any activity on my resume, and then other months I’m inundated? Why are certain months/seasons so much more active than others?
ANSWER: In our world, the 12-month calendar is a hiring cycle. Certain months / seasons are much more active than others.
As a matter of fact, based on the month, I can almost always predict how busy I’ll be with jobs. Seeing as how I’m writing to you in November, I’m sure there are a good number of you who are seeking new employment opportunities who are FRUSTRATED.
Let me tell you, people were frustrated last November, and the November before that too! In the employer’s world – the end of the 4th quarter (end of October through end of December) is the slowest time of year for hiring.
Why?
There are many factors that include a) the holidays, b) expended hiring budgets or waiting for hiring budget renewal, c) the decision makers are all on vacation, d) preparing for tax season, and the list goes on and on!
In my experience, the only hiring that gets done this time of year is when a company has to replace a very important individual whose left them suddenly.
Don’t fret too much though, right on the heels of the hiring drought comes the busiest season we see as recruiters! It’s what I like to call the “6-month blitz”.
A few weeks after the beginning of the New Year, the job opening barometer goes off the charts and stays that way through early spring into summer. February through June are the busiest months we see as recruiters.
Why? Again, a number of reasons including a) RENEWED BUDGETS, b) NEW strategic planning initiatives, c) end of the holiday season etc. Traditionally, this is the time of year when hiring is done for newly created and strategic jobs.
What’s the moral of the story? DON’T FRET, ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY’S, and rest up to rev up for the coming months of hiring mahem! (Though, don’t stop expanding your network and keep your eyes peeled – you never know if your dream job has just been posted on our website!)
