Scientists are planning to build a $1.5bn laser strong enough to tear the fabric of space.
I’m sorry, what was that?
That statement is enough to give any person of sound mind nightmares! According to the Daily Mail Reporter on October 31, 2011, it’s true.
“The laser will be capable of producing a beam of light so intense that it would be similar to the light the earth receives from the sun but focused on a small speck smaller than a pin prick.”
Scientists plan to use the laser to boil the fabric of space and create a vacuum, which will allow scientists to prove the space particles are real by pulling the vacuum fabric apart. They even hope it may prove whether other dimensions truly exist.
I think the one thing we can all agree is that technology is changing the world. But is it changing it for the better? I suppose that’s up to you.
Innovation through technology happens every day. Planes get bigger, cars get faster, and manufacturing processes become more streamlined. Technology protects humans from natural disasters, starvation and disease.
But technology also seems to be the root of all evil when it comes to global warming and environmental woes. So much of what man has invented is working its way to destroying the environment as we know it. And what about nuclear power and advanced weaponry?
And when you look at something like this laser that is planned, it just seems to beg for something to go wrong. The very space that they are planning to put holes in is OUR space. Technology goes hand in hand with science, but when does it go too far?
We all agree, we have jobs because of technology. And it’s going to continue to advance rapidly. But this laser is going to produce more energy than the center of the sun, and focus it onto one small spot. It seems like such an unnatural event to happen, so color me skeptical. Is human interaction and curiosity just going too far, now? What are your thoughts on the issue?
